Recording…

After a whole bunch of recording in a whole bunch of different places, working on both my own music in other studios and recording other peoples music on my own well-loved, well-used equipment, it feels awesome to put the two together for the first time since I made the demo in 2008. It reflects the genesis of the record: an expression of our local environment. Everything about this recording is going to be kept as local as is humanly possible. Art provided by my close friend Micheal Maclean, a brilliant programmer and designer; recorded at home by myself and Will; Covers screened by myself and Matt Elbows; I would press the records in Calgary if I could, but unfortunately no local pressing plants exist (that I know of).

What the fuck even is DIY, and if it even has any meaning, how can we express it without contradicting ourselves? What turns an idea into a cliche amidst people so hungry for “new” that “old” is basically anything whack or unpopular amidst those In The Know? Is it something anyone should even worry about anymore, or should we accept that our north american consumerism dictates that we depend on our global economy to feed us and keep us on the same systemic trajectory? I remember being a kid and feeling like there was nothing outside of my stomping grounds, that the 5 kilometer radius of my (then) little hometown was my whole universe. I doubt I can recreate my childhood feelings or would ever have any cause to do so, but occasionally its a pleasant reminder amidst what I would consider an oppressive regime of unsustainable info-comm and technological growth.

Do your best. Be sincere…
