The rise of fantasy and post-apocalyptic escapism is evidence of the civilized male’s biophilic frustration: he yearns for the immediacy that the struggle for survival affords. He rarely goes so far as to wish for the apocalypse to actualize but he immerses himself in simulated environments (his open space gaming worlds, zombie movies and dystopic novels, etc) that are hostile yet navigable, environments more akin to his pre-civilized habitat. His desire to escape in this way specifically shows that somewhere in his psyche he dearly misses the ever hostile, violently selected, vibrantly green habitat that he paved over in his terribly relentless fight from any and all uncertainty or suffering. Now suffocating in security, distracted by abstraction and trapped in the haphazardly soiled surroundings he has constructed out of crushed rocks and flaming, fossilized shit, he remains physically sedentary. Yet his head is whirling around an intricate globe of imitated immediacy, affording him the opportunity of flexing his instincts at phantoms of his long lost organic experience. -W
